These sculptures are an extension of my mask work. I make these a little differently than my masks which are made on top of a cast of my face- instead here I pour "Flexible Slip" which is basically a mixture of clay/latex (really stinky stuff) into a mold of my face. Before it completely cures, I am able to manipulate the material and 'roll' my face up or 'turn it partially inside out'. I love doing this as a way to represent the inner world vs outer persona (blurring the line in-between), and also looking at how the distorted face affects our perception of the face- does it make you uncomfortable and why?
